Free to use, no sign-up required. Reading Time is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Estimates how long a piece of text takes to read, for blog posts, speeches, newsletters and assignments.

How to use Reading Time

  1. Paste your text into the box.
  2. Set Reading speed (words per minute), or tap Slow · 150, Average · 220 or Fast · 300.
  3. Read the Reading time in minutes and the word count below it.

How it works

Words are counted by splitting the text on spaces and line breaks. Reading time is words ÷ words per minute, rounded to the nearest minute and never less than 1 minute. The default speed is 220 words per minute, and speeds below 50 are treated as 50.

Example

A 1,500-word article at the Average 220 wpm is 6.8 minutes, shown as 7 min. At Slow 150 it is 10 min, and at Fast 300 it is 5 min.

Questions about Reading Time

What reading speed should I use?

Adults reading ordinary text silently usually manage around 200 to 250 words per minute. Use a slower speed for technical material or for reading aloud, where 130 to 150 is typical.

Why does a short paragraph still say 1 minute?

The result is never shown below 1 minute, so 100 words at 220 wpm, which is under half a minute, still reads 1 min.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Reading Time to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
