Speed, Distance, Time

Solve for speed, distance, or time given the other two.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Speed, Distance, Time is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Solves for speed, distance or time when you know the other two, with each value in its own unit so miles, kilometres, minutes and hours can be mixed freely.

How to use Speed, Distance, Time

  1. Choose what to solve for: Speed, Distance or Time.
  2. Enter the two known values and pick a unit for each: m, km, mi or ft for distance; s, min or h for time; m/s, km/h, mph or ft/s for speed.
  3. Read the answer, and use the selector next to it to show the result in another unit.

How it works

Everything is converted to metres, seconds and metres per second, solved with speed = distance ÷ time, then converted back to the unit you chose. A mile is 1,609.344 m and a foot 0.3048 m. Results show up to three decimals, and time comes out as a decimal, so 1.5 h means one and a half hours.

Example

100 km at 50 km/h takes 2 h. A 42.195 km marathon run in 3.5 h, solved for speed in mph, averages 7.491 mph.

Questions about Speed, Distance, Time

How do I turn a decimal time into hours and minutes?

Keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 2.75 h is 2 hours 45 minutes. Or switch the result unit to min.

Does this give average or top speed?

Average speed: total distance over total time. Stops and slow sections are folded in, so it will be lower than the speed you cruise at.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Speed, Distance, Time to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
