Currency Converter

Convert between currencies at live ECB reference rates.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Currency Converter is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Converts an amount between about 30 major currencies at the European Central Bank’s published reference rates. It is for checking prices, invoices and travel budgets, not for trading.

How to use Currency Converter

  1. Enter the Amount.
  2. Choose the currency you have in the left dropdown and the one you want on the right — they start on USD and EUR.
  3. Use the Swap button between them to reverse the direction.
  4. Read the Converted amount and the line under it, which shows the rate used and the date of the ECB rates.

How it works

Rates come from the Frankfurter API, which republishes the ECB euro reference rates. The ECB sets them once each working day at around 16:00 CET, so the date shown is the last publication and rates do not move during the day or over weekends. Cross rates such as USD to GBP are worked out through the euro. The result is rounded to two decimals.

Example

With a hypothetical rate of 1 USD = 0.9 EUR, 250 USD converts to 250 × 0.9 = 225 EUR. The tool shows the real rate and its date under the result.

Questions about Currency Converter

Why does my bank give me a different rate?

Reference rates are mid-market figures with no margin. Banks, card networks and exchange counters add a spread or fee, often 1–5%, and use their own live rates. Expect to receive slightly less than this figure.

Why is my currency not listed?

The ECB publishes reference rates only for about 30 currencies, mostly those of large economies and EU neighbours. Currencies outside that set are not available here.

What it takes

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Currency Converter to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
