Powers, roots, natural log, and log base 10.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Powers & Logarithms is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Calculates x to the power y, the y-th root of x, and the natural and base-10 logarithms of x. Handy for growth problems, scientific notation and checking homework.
The power is Math.pow(x, y) and the root is x to the power 1 ÷ y, both rounded to 10 significant digits. For a negative x and an odd whole-number y, the root is taken from the positive value and the minus sign put back. Results with no real value read “not a real number”. The logs use Math.log and Math.log10, shown to 5 decimal places. The root is hidden when y is 0.
With x = 2 and y = 10: 2^10 = 1,024, the 10th root of 2 is 1.071773463, ln 2 = 0.69315 and log₁₀ 2 = 0.30103.
No real power of e or 10 ever gives 0 or a negative number, so their logarithms are undefined. The log results only appear when x is above 0.
Odd roots, yes: with x = −8 and y = 3 the tool gives −2, because (−2)³ = −8. Even roots of negatives, such as y = 2, have no real answer and show “not a real number”. The same applies to a negative x raised to a fractional power like 0.5.
You do not have to open Powers & Logarithms to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
