Convert numbers to and from scientific notation.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Scientific Notation is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Converts a number into scientific notation, and a number written in e-notation back into an ordinary decimal.
The number is written as one digit before the decimal point times a power of ten, keeping only the digits it needs, so 4.2 rather than 4.200000. The decimal form shows up to 20 decimal places. Numbers are stored as standard double-precision values, so only about 15 to 17 significant digits are kept.
0.00042 becomes 4.2 × 10^-4. Entering 6.02e23 gives 6.02 × 10^23, which is 602000000000000000000000 as a decimal. −1500 becomes −1.5 × 10^3.
Use e-notation: 4.2e-4. The e stands for “times ten to the power of”, and the same form works in this tool.
No. Engineering notation keeps the power of ten a multiple of 3, so 0.00042 would be 420 × 10⁻⁶. Scientific notation always puts exactly one non-zero digit before the point.
You do not have to open Scientific Notation to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
