Color Palette

Generate a palette of tints, shades, and a complement.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Color Palette is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Builds a colour palette in one of three ways: tints and shades of one colour, the main colours of a photo, or a hand-picked set. Use it to start a brand, slide or website colour scheme.

How to use Color Palette

  1. Choose From color, From image or Manual.
  2. For From color, pick or type a hex code; for From image, choose a picture; for Manual, edit up to 8 colours and use “Add color”.
  3. Tap a swatch to copy one colour.
  4. Press Copy palette to copy every hex code, separated by commas.

How it works

From color keeps your colour’s hue and saturation and sets lightness to 88, 74, 60, 46, 32 and 20%, then adds the complement: the hue turned 180° at 50% lightness. From image shrinks the picture to 64 × 64 pixels on your device, groups pixels into coarse colour buckets, averages each, and keeps the 7 most common that differ from each other by at least 60 in summed RGB distance.

Example

#1B3A86 is hsl(223, 66%, 32%). From color gives #CCD8F5, #91AAE8, #567CDC, #2854C3, #1C3A87 and #112455, plus the complement #D4A42B.

Questions about Color Palette

What is a complementary colour?

It is the hue on the opposite side of the colour wheel, 180° away. Pairing a colour with its complement gives the strongest contrast, which suits buttons and highlights.

What is the difference between a tint and a shade?

A tint is the colour made lighter, toward white; a shade is made darker, toward black. The first three swatches here are tints and the last three are shades.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Color Palette to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
