Word Counter

Words, characters, sentences, and reading time for any text.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Word Counter is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Counts words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type or paste, and estimates reading time. Useful for essays with a word limit, meta descriptions and social posts.

How to use Word Counter

  1. Paste or type your text into the box.
  2. Read Words, Characters and No spaces.
  3. Read Sentences, Paragraphs and Read time.

How it works

Words are runs of text separated by spaces or line breaks. Characters counts everything including spaces; No spaces drops all whitespace. A sentence ends at a . ! or ? followed by a space or the end of the text. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line. Read time assumes 200 words per minute, rounded, with a minimum of 1 minute.

Example

“The quick brown fox jumps. It lands! Then it runs away.” has 11 words, 55 characters, 45 without spaces, 3 sentences and 1 paragraph, with a read time of 1 minute.

Questions about Word Counter

Do hyphenated words count as one or two?

One. “Well-known” has no space in it, so it counts as a single word, which matches how most word processors count.

Why is the sentence count off for abbreviations?

A period followed by a space looks like a sentence end, so “Dr. Smith” or “e.g. this” adds an extra sentence. Word and character counts are unaffected.
