Body Surface Area

Estimate BSA from height and weight.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Body Surface Area is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Estimates body surface area in square metres from height and weight. Clinicians use BSA to scale some drug doses and to index measures such as cardiac output.

How to use Body Surface Area

  1. Enter your Height in centimetres.
  2. Enter your Weight in kilograms.
  3. Read the Body surface area in m², shown to three decimal places.

How it works

The tool uses the Mosteller formula: BSA = √(height in cm × weight in kg ÷ 3600). It is an estimate for education, not medical advice, and dosing decisions belong to a clinician.

Example

Height 175 cm and weight 70 kg give √(175 × 70 ÷ 3600) = √3.403, so 1.845 m². For 160 cm and 55 kg the result is about 1.563 m².

Questions about Body Surface Area

What is a typical adult body surface area?

Around 1.9 m² for adult men and 1.6 m² for adult women, though it varies widely with size.

Why are there several BSA formulas?

DuBois, Haycock, Mosteller and others were each fitted to different groups of people. Mosteller is widely used because it is simple and gives similar results for most adults.

Use it from chat
