Compare two texts and see what changed.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Text Diff is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Compares two versions of a text and marks what was removed and what was added, for checking edits to a document, contract clause or config file.
The tool finds the longest common subsequence of the two texts, then marks everything outside it as removed from the original or added in the changed version. In Words mode the texts are split on whitespace, so spacing and line breaks are ignored; in Lines mode each line is compared whole. Each text is compared up to its first 1,200 words or lines, and a note appears when anything past that was left out.
Comparing “The quick brown fox jumps” with “The quick red fox leaps” by words keeps The, quick and fox, and shows brown and jumps removed and red and leaps added: +2 · −2.
Words suits prose, where a sentence may be reworded without its lines lining up. Lines suits code, CSV and config files, where each line is a unit and you want to see which ones changed.
A diff only knows keep, remove and add. A replaced word is recorded as the old word removed and the new one added in its place.
You do not have to open Text Diff to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
