Emergency Fund

How much to set aside for months of expenses.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Emergency Fund is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Sets a savings target for an emergency fund from your monthly expenses and how many months you want covered, and shows how far along you already are.

How to use Emergency Fund

  1. Enter your essential Monthly expenses.
  2. Enter the Months buffer you want, often 3 to 6.
  3. Enter what you have Saved so far.
  4. Read the Target, the amount Still needed, and how many months your savings already cover.

How it works

Target = monthly expenses × months. Still needed = target − saved, never below zero. Covered = saved ÷ monthly expenses, in months to one decimal.

Example

Expenses of 2,500 a month with a 6-month buffer give a target of 15,000. With 5,000 saved you still need 10,000, and your savings already cover 2 months.

Questions about Emergency Fund

How many months of expenses should I save?

Three months is a common minimum. Six months or more suits single-income households, freelancers and anyone in a job that is hard to replace quickly.

Should the fund cover my full spending?

Base it on essentials such as rent, food, utilities and loan payments. Spending you would cut in a crisis can be left out, which makes the target easier to reach.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Emergency Fund to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
