Estimate lean body mass from sex, height and weight (Boer formula).
Free to use, no sign-up required. Lean Body Mass is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Estimates your lean body mass, everything except fat, and the fat mass left over, from sex, height and weight. Useful for setting protein targets or tracking body composition alongside the scale.
The tool uses the Boer formula. For men, lean mass = 0.407 × weight + 0.267 × height − 19.2; for women, 0.252 × weight + 0.473 × height − 48.3, with weight in kg and height in cm. Fat mass is weight minus lean mass. It is a population estimate, not medical advice.
A man 178 cm and 80 kg gets 0.407 × 80 + 0.267 × 178 − 19.2 = 60.9 kg lean mass and 19.1 kg fat mass. A woman 165 cm and 65 kg gets 46.1 kg lean and 18.9 kg fat.
Muscle, bone, organs, skin and body water: all of your weight except fat.
The formula sees only height and weight, so it cannot tell muscle from fat. A body-fat measurement such as DEXA or skinfolds is needed for a personal figure.
You do not have to open Lean Body Mass to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
