Line Tools

Sort, dedupe, reverse, number, and clean up lines.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Line Tools is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Cleans up lists one line at a time: sorting, removing duplicates, reversing, trimming, dropping blank lines and numbering, for things like email lists, keywords or log extracts.

How to use Line Tools

  1. Paste your text into the box, one item per line.
  2. Click an operation: Sort A–Z, Sort Z–A, Sort 0–9, Dedupe, Dedupe (aA), Reverse, Trim, Drop blanks, Number or Un-number.
  3. Chain several operations; each one edits the text in place, and Undo steps back up to 20 times.
  4. Check the line, unique and character counts, then Copy the result.

How it works

Sort A–Z and Z–A use locale-aware comparison. Sort 0–9 orders by the first number in each line after skipping leading non-digits, with lines that have no number treated as 0. Dedupe keeps the first copy of each exact line; Dedupe (aA) ignores case. Un-number removes a leading “1.” or “1)”. The counts ignore blank lines.

Example

The lines “item 10, item 2, apple, Item 2, item 1” sort A–Z as apple, item 1, item 10, item 2, Item 2, but Sort 0–9 gives apple, item 1, item 2, Item 2, item 10. Dedupe (aA) on the original keeps item 10, item 2, apple, item 1.

Questions about Line Tools

Why does alphabetical sorting put 10 before 2?

Alphabetical order compares character by character, and “1” comes before “2”. Use Sort 0–9 when lines start with or contain numbers you want in numeric order.

Why did Dedupe keep lines that look the same?

Dedupe only removes exact matches, so a trailing space or different capitals make lines distinct. Run Trim first, and use Dedupe (aA) to ignore case.

What it takes

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Line Tools to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
