Palindrome Checker

Check whether a word or phrase reads the same both ways.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Palindrome Checker is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Tells you whether a word, phrase or number reads the same forwards and backwards, ignoring spaces, punctuation and capitals. Useful for word games, puzzles and checking famous palindromes.

How to use Palindrome Checker

  1. Type a word or phrase into the box.
  2. Read the Yes or No answer under Palindrome?.
  3. Check the normalized line to see exactly which characters were compared.

How it works

The text is lowercased and everything that is not a letter or digit is removed, in any script, so Bengali, Arabic or Cyrillic text works as well as English. The remaining characters are compared with their own reverse, one code point at a time. An input with no letters or digits is never a palindrome.

Example

“A man, a plan, a canal: Panama!” normalizes to amanaplanacanalpanama, which is the same reversed, so the answer is Yes.

Questions about Palindrome Checker

Do numbers count?

Yes. Digits are kept, so 12321 and dates written as 02/02/2020 (normalized to 02022020) are checked the same way as words.

Why is a phrase with accented letters reported as No?

Accents are not stripped. é and e are different letters to the check, so a phrase that is only a palindrome without its accents will fail.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Palindrome Checker to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
