Take-Home Pay

Estimate net pay after tax and deductions.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Take-Home Pay is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Gives a quick estimate of take-home pay from gross pay, a single tax rate and any other fixed deductions. It works for any pay period: a paycheck, a month or a year.

How to use Take-Home Pay

  1. Enter your Gross pay for the period.
  2. Enter your overall Tax as one percentage.
  3. Enter Other deductions as a money amount, such as pension, insurance or union dues.
  4. Read the Tax amount, your Take-home and the Effective deductions percentage.

How it works

Tax = gross × tax rate ÷ 100. Take-home = gross − tax − other deductions. Effective deductions = (1 − take-home ÷ gross) × 100. The tax is one flat percentage of gross; the tool does not apply tax brackets, allowances or social security rates, and it does not treat any deduction as pre-tax.

Example

Gross pay of 5,000 at 22% tax with 200 of other deductions: tax is 1,100, take-home is 3,700, and 26% of gross goes to tax and deductions.

Questions about Take-Home Pay

Should I enter my tax bracket as the rate?

No. A bracket rate applies only to income above that band, so your overall rate is lower. Use your effective rate: total tax on your last payslip divided by gross pay.

What about pre-tax deductions like a 401(k)?

This tool taxes the full gross. To reflect a pre-tax deduction, reduce Gross by that amount and leave it out of Other deductions.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Take-Home Pay to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
