Reverse Percentage

Find the original value before a percentage change.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Reverse Percentage is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Recovers the original price from a final price after tax was added or a discount was taken off, for example the net price on a receipt that only shows the total.

How to use Reverse Percentage

  1. Choose Remove tax or Before discount.
  2. Enter the Price incl. tax, or the Sale price.
  3. Enter the Tax rate, or the Discount, as a percentage.
  4. Read the Original price and the Tax amount, or how much You saved.

How it works

Remove tax: original = final ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). Before discount: original = final ÷ (1 − rate ÷ 100). The second figure is the difference between the final and original prices.

Example

A 120 total including 20% tax had an original price of 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100, so the tax was 20. An item on sale for 80 after 20% off was originally 80 ÷ 0.8 = 100.

Questions about Reverse Percentage

Why can’t I just take 20% off the total to remove 20% tax?

The tax was 20% of the original price, not of the total. Taking 20% off 120 gives 96, but the correct net price is 100, because 100 plus 20% is 120.

Does this work for VAT and sales tax?

Yes, for any single percentage added on top of a price. Enter the combined rate if several taxes are added to the same base.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Reverse Percentage to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
