Memorable multi-word passphrases (Diceware-style).
Free to use, no sign-up required. Passphrase Generator is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Builds a password from several random common words, optionally with a number on the end. Passphrases like this are easier to remember and type than a jumble of symbols.
Each word is picked from a built-in list of 500 common four-letter English words, independently, so a word can repeat. That gives about 9 bits of entropy per word; the appended number adds about 10 bits. Words and the number are drawn with crypto.getRandomValues using rejection sampling, so every word is equally likely. An empty separator falls back to a hyphen.
Four words with a hyphen and a number give a phrase shaped like rain-gold-tide-wolf-417. Four words carry about 36 bits of entropy, or about 46 with the number.
Each word adds about 9 bits. Four words (about 36 bits) suits a low-value account behind rate limiting; six words (about 54 bits) or more is better for anything that matters, such as a password manager’s master password.
The strength estimate already assumes an attacker knows the list. What protects you is the number of combinations, 500 to the power of the word count, not secrecy about the method.
You do not have to open Passphrase Generator to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
