Percent of Total

What percentage one value is of a total.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Percent of Total is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Tells you what percentage one value is of a total, such as one category’s share of a budget or one region’s share of sales.

How to use Percent of Total

  1. Enter the Part, the amount you are measuring.
  2. Enter the Total it belongs to.
  3. Read the Share as a percentage and the Remaining percentage of the total.

How it works

Share = part ÷ total × 100, shown to two decimal places. Remaining = 100 − share. A total of zero gives no result.

Example

A part of 45 out of a total of 250 is 45 ÷ 250 × 100 = 18%, leaving 82% for everything else.

Questions about Percent of Total

Can the share be more than 100%?

Yes, if the part is larger than the total, which usually means the part is not really a piece of that total. The remaining figure then goes negative.

How is this different from percentage change?

Percent of total compares a piece to its whole at one moment. Percentage change compares a new value to an old one, dividing the difference by the old value.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Percent of Total to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
