Split the Bill

Divide a bill evenly across any number of people.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Split the Bill is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Divides a restaurant or group bill evenly, adding tax and a tip first, so everyone knows what to pay.

How to use Split the Bill

  1. Enter the Bill before tax, and the number of People.
  2. Enter the Tax rate as a percentage, or 0 if tax is already included.
  3. Choose how to tip with the switch beside Tip: % for a percentage of the bill, or amount for a flat sum, then enter it.
  4. Read the Total, with the tip shown in both money and percent, and the amount Per person.

How it works

Total = bill × (1 + tax ÷ 100) + tip. A percentage tip is worked out on the pre-tax bill, not on the bill plus tax. Per person = total ÷ people, with people treated as at least 1. The result is not rounded to coins, so small leftovers are up to the group.

Example

An 80 bill with 8% tax, an 18% tip and 4 people: the tip is 14.40, the total is 86.40 + 14.40 = 100.80, and each person pays 25.20.

Questions about Split the Bill

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Etiquette guides usually say before tax, which is what the % mode does here. If you prefer tipping on the taxed total, switch to amount and enter the figure you want.

What if people ordered very different amounts?

This splits evenly. For an itemised split, run each person’s share of the bill through separately with People set to 1.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Split the Bill to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
