Length Converter

Convert between metres, feet, miles, inches, and more.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Length Converter is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Converts a length or distance between metric units (mm, cm, m, km), imperial and US units (in, ft, yd, mi) and the nautical mile. People reach for it with a height in feet and inches, a race distance, or a sea chart.

How to use Length Converter

  1. Type the number in the box on the left.
  2. Pick the unit you have in the dropdown under it — it starts on m.
  3. Pick the unit you want in the right-hand dropdown — it starts on ft.
  4. Read the answer in the highlighted box; it updates as you type.

How it works

Every unit is stored in metres and the value is scaled through metres. The inch is exactly 0.0254 m and the mile exactly 1,609.344 m by international definition, and the nautical mile is 1,852 m.

Example

A height of 5 ft 10 in is 70 in. Enter 70, choose in → cm, and you get 177.8 cm. A marathon, 42.195 km, comes out as 26.218757 mi.

Questions about Length Converter

How do I convert feet and inches together?

The tool takes one unit at a time, so turn the height into inches first: feet × 12 + inches. 6 ft 2 in is 74 in, which you can then convert to cm or m.

What is the difference between a mile and a nautical mile?

A statute mile is 1,609.344 m and is used on roads in the US and UK. A nautical mile is 1,852 m, based on one minute of latitude, and is used at sea and in aviation. Knots are nautical miles per hour.
