How it works

Stride length is 0.414 × height. Distance is steps × stride. Calories are weight × distance × a cost per kg per km of 0.5 below 7 km/h (walking), 1.0 at 8 km/h and above (running), blended between. Cadence is steps per minute. Bands are Sedentary under 5,000, Low active under 7,500, Somewhat active under 10,000, Active under 12,500 and Highly active above. These are estimates, not medical advice.

Example

10,000 steps in 90 minutes at 175 cm and 70 kg: stride 72.45 cm, distance 7.25 km (4.5 mi), pace 4.8 km/h walking, cadence 111 steps per minute, about 254 kcal, 100% of the goal and the Active band.

Questions about Steps to Distance

How many steps are in a kilometre?

It depends on stride. With this tool’s 0.414 × height rule, a 175 cm person covers a kilometre in about 1,380 steps.

Does walking the same distance faster burn more calories?

Only a little while walking. Once you break into a run the cost per kilometre roughly doubles, which is why the calorie figure jumps between 7 and 8 km/h.
