Number of tiles needed for a floor or wall area.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Tile Estimator is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Counts the tiles needed for a floor or wall from its area and the tile size, with a waste margin for cuts and breakages.
One tile’s area is width × height, converted to m² in metric (cm ÷ 100 each side) so it matches the floor area. Exact fit = floor area ÷ tile area, rounded up. Tiles needed = exact count × (1 + waste % ÷ 100), rounded up; the spare figure is the difference between the two rounded numbers.
12 m² with 30 × 30 cm tiles: each tile is 0.09 m², so the exact fit is 133.3, or 134 tiles. With the 10% straight-lay margin you need 146.7, rounded to 147 tiles, including 13 spare.
About 10% for a straight grid, 15% for a diagonal lay and 20% for patterns such as herringbone, because angled cuts leave offcuts you cannot reuse. Keep a few spares from the same batch for future repairs.
Not noticeably. The tool uses the tile’s own size, which slightly overstates the tiles needed, and that small surplus is on the safe side.
You do not have to open Tile Estimator to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
