Moon Phase

Today’s moon phase and illumination.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Moon Phase is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Shows today’s moon phase, how much of the disc is lit, the moon’s age, days until full moon and the approximate Islamic date. Useful for night photography, stargazing or tracking the lunar month.

How to use Moon Phase

  1. Open the tool; it uses your device’s clock and needs no location.
  2. Read the phase name and the percentage illuminated under the moon picture.
  3. Check Moon age and Days to full.
  4. Read the Islamic date (approx.) if your browser supports that calendar.

How it works

Age is the time since a new moon on 6 January 2000 at 18:14 UTC, modulo a mean synodic month of 29.530588853 days. Illumination is (1 − cos(2π × age ÷ 29.53)) ÷ 2. Names follow age: New Moon to day 1, Waxing Crescent to 6.4, First Quarter to 8.4, Waxing Gibbous to 13.8, Full Moon to 15.8, Waning Gibbous to 21.1, Last Quarter to 23.1, Waning Crescent to 27.7, then New Moon. Full moon is day 14.77; the picture is lit on the right while waxing, as seen from the north.

Example

At 00:00 UTC on 1 January 2026, the moon is 11.9 days old, 91% illuminated, named Waxing Gibbous, with 3 days to full.

Questions about Moon Phase

Why is the lunar month about 29.5 days and not 27.3?

The moon orbits Earth in 27.3 days, but Earth also moves around the sun, so the moon needs about two more days to line up with the sun again.

Why can a real full moon differ from the prediction?

The tool uses the average month, but the real orbit is elliptical, so actual phases can fall hours from the mean.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Moon Phase to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
