Local News

Recent headlines mentioning your city.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Local News is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Lists recent news headlines that mention your city, with the outlet and how long ago each was seen. Use it for a quick look at what local and international press are saying about where you live.

How to use Local News

  1. Set your location by city name or with “Use my current location”.
  2. Scroll the headlines under “Recent headlines near” your city.
  3. Tap a headline to open the full article on the publisher’s site in a new tab.
  4. Press the refresh arrow for a new fetch, or Retry if the service is busy.

How it works

Headlines come from the GDELT global news index, which the tool queries through the Xenition gateway for the exact city name in quotes, newest first. If you used your current location, the city name comes from reverse geocoding, falling back to the country. Results are filtered to your interface language and widened to all languages when none match, capped at two stories per outlet and 14 in total, and cached for 10 minutes.

Example

Each row shows the story’s image when the outlet has one, the headline, the outlet’s domain such as example.com, and an age such as 45m ago, 3h ago or 2d ago.

Questions about Local News

Why do some headlines mention a different place with the same name?

The search matches the city name as a phrase, so a story about Paris, Texas can appear for Paris, France. Open the article to check.

What is GDELT?

The Global Database of Events, Language and Tone is a public project that monitors online news in over 100 languages and indexes articles within minutes of publication.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Local News to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
