Randomly split names into balanced teams.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Team Picker is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Splits a list of names into random teams, either a set number of teams or teams of a set size, for sports sessions, classes and workshops.
Blank lines are ignored. The names are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle using Math.random, then dealt out like cards: first name to Team 1, second to Team 2, and so on. In Per team mode the number of teams is the name count divided by the team size, rounded up.
Seven names in Per team mode with 3 members per team gives 7 ÷ 3 rounded up = 3 teams, dealt as 3, 2 and 2 people. The same seven names with Teams set to 2 gives teams of 4 and 3.
When the names do not divide evenly, dealing round-robin leaves the first teams one person bigger, never more.
No. It sets how many teams to make, then balances them, so 7 names at 3 per team becomes 3, 2 and 2 rather than 3, 3 and 1.
You do not have to open Team Picker to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
