Tip & Split

Tip amount, total, and per-person split for a bill.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Tip & Split is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Works out the tip on a restaurant or service bill, the total with tip, and each person’s share when the bill is split.

How to use Tip & Split

  1. Enter the Bill amount.
  2. Type a Tip % or tap one of the presets: 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25%. The default is 15%.
  3. Enter how many people to Split between. Leave it at 1 if you are paying alone.
  4. Read the Tip, Total and Per person figures.

How it works

Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number of people, where anything below 1 is treated as 1. Results are shown to at most two decimal places and are not rounded up to whole coins.

Example

A bill of 84.50 with an 18% tip gives a tip of 15.21 and a total of 99.71. Split between 3 people, each pays 33.24.

Questions about Tip & Split

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Customs differ, but many people tip on the pre-tax amount. To do that, enter the subtotal before tax as the bill, then add the tax to the total yourself.

Why do the per-person shares not add up exactly to the total?

Each share is rounded to two decimals for display. When the total does not divide evenly, one person may need to pay a cent more to cover the difference.

What it takes

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Tip & Split to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
