Converts area between square metric units, square inches, feet, yards and miles, and the two land units, the acre and the hectare. Common uses are floor plans, property listings and farmland.
Every unit is stored in square metres and the value is scaled through m². Square units scale by the square of the length factor: a foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². An acre is 4,046.8564224 m² and a hectare is exactly 10,000 m².
A 2,500 ft² house is 232.2576 m². A 5 hectare field is 12.355269 acres.
Because 3.28 is the length factor. Area is length times length, so 1 m² is 3.2808 × 3.2808, about 10.76 ft². Squaring the factor is the step people most often forget.
Acres are standard for land in the US and UK. Hectares are the metric land unit used in most other countries and in agriculture statistics. One hectare is a 100 m × 100 m square, about 2.47 acres.
