Simplify a width×height ratio and scale dimensions.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Aspect Ratio is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Reduces a width and height to its simplest aspect ratio, and resizes an image or video to new dimensions without changing its shape.
Both sides are rounded to whole numbers and divided by their greatest common divisor, found with Euclid’s algorithm. The decimal is width ÷ height to two places. A resized side is the other side × the ratio, rounded to the nearest whole pixel.
1920 × 1080 reduces to 16:9, or 1.78:1. Resized to a width of 1280, the height becomes 720. A 2560 × 1080 ultrawide screen reduces to 64:27, or 2.37:1.
21:9 is a marketing name. Common ultrawide resolutions such as 2560 × 1080 work out to exactly 64:27 (2.37:1), while true 21:9 would be 2.33:1.
Some widths do not divide evenly by the ratio, so the other side is rounded to a whole pixel and the shape is very slightly off. Widths that are multiples of the reduced ratio avoid this.
You do not have to open Aspect Ratio to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
