Convert between bytes, KB, MB, GB, and TB.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Data Size Converter is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Converts digital storage sizes between bits, bytes and KB up to PB. It answers questions like how big a file is in GB, or why a new drive shows less space than the box says.
This converter uses binary multiples: 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, and so on up to PB, the way Windows reports file and disk sizes. A bit is one eighth of a byte.
A drive sold as 500 GB holds 500,000,000,000 bytes. Enter that in B and convert to GB: the tool shows 465.661287 GB, which is the figure Windows displays.
Drive makers count in decimal (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), while Windows counts in binary (1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). Nothing is missing; the same bytes are divided by a bigger number. macOS has used decimal units since 2009, so it shows the box figure.
They are the formal names for the binary units: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Strictly, KB means 1,000 bytes, but KB is still widely used for 1,024, as it is in this tool.
No. A byte is 8 bits. Storage is measured in bytes (B) and network speeds in bits (b).
Data Size Converter converts between 7 units: bit, B, KB, MB, GB, TB and PB. Factors are given against B.
| Unit | In B | 1 B equals |
|---|---|---|
| 1 bit | 0.125 B | 8 bit |
| 1 KB | 1024 B | 0.0009765625 KB |
| 1 MB | 1048576 B | 0.0000009537 MB |
| 1 GB | 1073741824 B | 0.0000000009 GB |
| 1 TB | 1099511627776 B | 0 TB |
| 1 PB | 1125899906842624 B | 0 PB |
Common quantities in B, converted. Every value is computed from the factors above, so the chart and the converter cannot disagree.
| B | bit | KB | MB | GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 B | 8 | 0.0009765625 | 0.0000009537 | 0.0000000009 |
| 2 B | 16 | 0.001953125 | 0.0000019073 | 0.0000000019 |
| 5 B | 40 | 0.0048828125 | 0.0000047684 | 0.0000000047 |
| 10 B | 80 | 0.009765625 | 0.0000095367 | 0.0000000093 |
| 25 B | 200 | 0.0244140625 | 0.0000238419 | 0.0000000233 |
| 100 B | 800 | 0.09765625 | 0.0000953674 | 0.0000000931 |
1 B is 8 bit. To convert B to bit, divide by 0.125 — so 10 B is 80 bit.
1 bit is 0.125 B. To convert bit to B, multiply by 0.125 — so 10 bit is 1.25 B.
1 B is 0.0009765625 KB. To convert B to KB, divide by 1024 — so 10 B is 0.009765625 KB.
1 KB is 1024 B. To convert KB to B, multiply by 1024 — so 10 KB is 10240 B.
1 B is 0.0000009537 MB. To convert B to MB, divide by 1048576 — so 10 B is 0.0000095367 MB.
1 MB is 1048576 B. To convert MB to B, multiply by 1048576 — so 10 MB is 10485760 B.
1 B is 0.0000000009 GB. To convert B to GB, divide by 1073741824 — so 10 B is 0.0000000093 GB.
1 GB is 1073741824 B. To convert GB to B, multiply by 1073741824 — so 10 GB is 10737418240 B.
You do not have to open Data Size Converter to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
