Convert between bps, Kbps, Mbps, and Gbps.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Data Rate Converter is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Converts data transfer speeds between bits per second (bps up to Gbps) and bytes per second (KB/s and MB/s). The usual question is how fast a download will really go on an internet plan sold in Mbps.
Every unit is stored in bits per second. kbps, Mbps and Gbps are decimal steps of 1,000. KB/s is 8,000 bps and MB/s is 8,000,000 bps: a byte is 8 bits, and here K and M are decimal, as network speeds normally are. That differs from the data size converter, which uses 1,024.
A 100 Mbps connection moves at most 12.5 MB/s. A 1 Gbps line tops out at 125 MB/s.
The plan is sold in megabits and the download counter shows megabytes. Divide by 8: 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s. Protocol overhead and Wi-Fi usually take off a further 5–10% or more.
A lowercase b is bits and an uppercase B is bytes, and a byte is 8 bits. Mbps (megabits per second) measures network speed; MB (megabytes) measures file size.
Data Rate Converter converts between 6 units: bps, kbps, KB/s, Mbps, MB/s and Gbps. Factors are given against bps.
| Unit | In bps | 1 bps equals |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kbps | 1000 bps | 0.001 kbps |
| 1 KB/s | 8000 bps | 0.000125 KB/s |
| 1 Mbps | 1000000 bps | 0.000001 Mbps |
| 1 MB/s | 8000000 bps | 0.000000125 MB/s |
| 1 Gbps | 1000000000 bps | 0.000000001 Gbps |
Common quantities in bps, converted. Every value is computed from the factors above, so the chart and the converter cannot disagree.
| bps | kbps | KB/s | Mbps | MB/s |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 bps | 0.001 | 0.000125 | 0.000001 | 0.000000125 |
| 2 bps | 0.002 | 0.00025 | 0.000002 | 0.00000025 |
| 5 bps | 0.005 | 0.000625 | 0.000005 | 0.000000625 |
| 10 bps | 0.01 | 0.00125 | 0.00001 | 0.00000125 |
| 25 bps | 0.025 | 0.003125 | 0.000025 | 0.000003125 |
| 100 bps | 0.1 | 0.0125 | 0.0001 | 0.0000125 |
1 bps is 0.001 kbps. To convert bps to kbps, divide by 1000 — so 10 bps is 0.01 kbps.
1 kbps is 1000 bps. To convert kbps to bps, multiply by 1000 — so 10 kbps is 10000 bps.
1 bps is 0.000125 KB/s. To convert bps to KB/s, divide by 8000 — so 10 bps is 0.00125 KB/s.
1 KB/s is 8000 bps. To convert KB/s to bps, multiply by 8000 — so 10 KB/s is 80000 bps.
1 bps is 0.000001 Mbps. To convert bps to Mbps, divide by 1000000 — so 10 bps is 0.00001 Mbps.
1 Mbps is 1000000 bps. To convert Mbps to bps, multiply by 1000000 — so 10 Mbps is 10000000 bps.
1 bps is 0.000000125 MB/s. To convert bps to MB/s, divide by 8000000 — so 10 bps is 0.00000125 MB/s.
1 MB/s is 8000000 bps. To convert MB/s to bps, multiply by 8000000 — so 10 MB/s is 80000000 bps.
You do not have to open Data Rate Converter to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
