Metric Prefix Converter

Convert between kilo, milli, mega, micro, and more.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Metric Prefix Converter is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Converts a value between SI metric prefixes, from pico to tera, such as milliamps to amps or megabytes to gigabytes.

How to use Metric Prefix Converter

  1. Type the value in the left box.
  2. Choose the prefix you are converting from. base means the unit with no prefix, such as metres or grams.
  3. Choose the prefix to convert to on the right, and read the result.

How it works

Each prefix is a power of ten: pico 10⁻¹², nano 10⁻⁹, micro 10⁻⁶, milli 10⁻³, centi 10⁻², base 1, kilo 10³, mega 10⁶, giga 10⁹, tera 10¹². The result is value × from factor ÷ to factor. Results below 0.000001 or at or above 10¹⁵ are shown in scientific notation.

Example

1 kilo is 1,000 base units. 2.5 mega is 0.0025 giga. 4,700 pico, as in a 4,700 pF capacitor, is 4.7 nano.

Questions about Metric Prefix Converter

Is a kilobyte 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?

The SI prefix kilo always means 1,000, and that is what this tool uses. The 1,024-based units have their own names, kibi, mebi and gibi (KiB, MiB, GiB).

How many steps apart are micro and milli?

A factor of 1,000. Each of the main prefixes from pico to tera is 1,000 times the one before, with centi as the one exception in between.
