Spell out a number in English.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Number to Words is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Writes a number out in English words, as needed on cheques, contracts and invoices, or to check how a large number is read aloud.
The number is split into groups of three digits from the right, and each group is named with hundreds, tens and ones, then its scale: thousand, million, billion or trillion. Tens and ones are joined with a hyphen, as in sixty-seven, and “and” is not used. Values up to just under one quadrillion are supported. A minus sign becomes “negative”, and any fractional part is dropped.
1,234,567 becomes “One million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven”, 1000005 becomes “One million five”, and -2.5 becomes “Negative two”.
Both are correct. British English usually includes “and”; American usage, especially on cheques, often leaves it out. This tool uses the form without “and”.
The usual form is the whole amount in words followed by the cents as a fraction, such as “twelve and 99/100”. This tool writes whole numbers only, so add the cents yourself.
You do not have to open Number to Words to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
