Convert between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and gas marks.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Oven Temperature Converter is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Converts oven temperatures between Celsius, Fahrenheit and UK gas marks, and names the traditional cookbook term such as moderate or hot. It is for recipes written for a different oven.
Fahrenheit becomes Celsius by (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8, and Celsius becomes Fahrenheit by × 1.8 + 32; both display as whole degrees. Gas marks come from the standard UK table (¼ = 110 °C, ½ = 120, 1 = 140, 2 = 150, 3 = 170, 4 = 180, 5 = 190, 6 = 200, 7 = 220, 8 = 230, 9 = 240, plus 10 = 260), and the tool shows the mark whose temperature is nearest.
An American recipe at 350 °F is 177 °C, gas mark 4, which the tool labels Moderate. 200 °C is 392 °F and gas mark 6, Moderately hot.
Usually yes. Fan (convection) ovens cook hotter for the same setting, so most recipes suggest about 20 °C (25 °F) lower. The conversions here are for conventional ovens.
In older cookbooks, a moderate oven is around 180 °C (350 °F), gas mark 4. Hot is about 220 °C, and a very cool oven is below 140 °C.
You do not have to open Oven Temperature Converter to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
