Convert between newton-metres and pound-feet.
Free to use, no sign-up required. Torque Converter is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.
Converts torque between newton-metres, kilonewton-metres, kilogram-force metres, pound-feet and pound-inches. Mechanics use it to match a wheel-nut or bolt spec to a torque wrench in different units.
Every unit is stored in newton-metres: 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179483 N·m, 1 lbf·in = 0.1129848291 N·m (one twelfth of a lbf·ft) and 1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m.
A wheel-nut spec of 120 N·m is 88.507458 lbf·ft. A 25 lbf·ft bolt spec is 33.895449 N·m, or 300 lbf·in on a small inch-pound wrench.
For torque, yes — pound-feet and foot-pounds are used interchangeably on wrench scales. Strictly, ft·lb is often reserved for energy, but the number is the same.
Small fasteners need low torque, and a number like 90 lbf·in is easier to set than 7.5 lbf·ft. Dividing by 12 converts inch-pounds to foot-pounds.
Torque Converter converts between 5 units: lbf·in, N·m, lbf·ft, kgf·m and kN·m. Factors are given against N·m.
| Unit | In N·m | 1 N·m equals |
|---|---|---|
| 1 lbf·in | 0.1129848291 N·m | 8.8507457857 lbf·in |
| 1 lbf·ft | 1.3558179483 N·m | 0.7375621493 lbf·ft |
| 1 kgf·m | 9.80665 N·m | 0.1019716213 kgf·m |
| 1 kN·m | 1000 N·m | 0.001 kN·m |
Common quantities in N·m, converted. Every value is computed from the factors above, so the chart and the converter cannot disagree.
| N·m | lbf·in | lbf·ft | kgf·m | kN·m |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 N·m | 8.8507457857 | 0.7375621493 | 0.1019716213 | 0.001 |
| 2 N·m | 17.7014915713 | 1.4751242986 | 0.2039432426 | 0.002 |

| 10 N·m | 88.5074578566 | 7.3756214929 | 1.019716213 | 0.01 |
| 25 N·m | 221.2686446414 | 18.4390537324 | 2.5492905324 | 0.025 |
| 100 N·m | 885.0745785657 | 73.7562149294 | 10.1971621298 | 0.1 |
1 N·m is 8.8507457857 lbf·in. To convert N·m to lbf·in, divide by 0.1129848291 — so 10 N·m is 88.5074578566 lbf·in.
1 lbf·in is 0.1129848291 N·m. To convert lbf·in to N·m, multiply by 0.1129848291 — so 10 lbf·in is 1.129848291 N·m.
1 N·m is 0.7375621493 lbf·ft. To convert N·m to lbf·ft, divide by 1.3558179483 — so 10 N·m is 7.3756214929 lbf·ft.
1 lbf·ft is 1.3558179483 N·m. To convert lbf·ft to N·m, multiply by 1.3558179483 — so 10 lbf·ft is 13.558179483 N·m.
1 N·m is 0.1019716213 kgf·m. To convert N·m to kgf·m, divide by 9.80665 — so 10 N·m is 1.019716213 kgf·m.
1 kgf·m is 9.80665 N·m. To convert kgf·m to N·m, multiply by 9.80665 — so 10 kgf·m is 98.0665 N·m.
1 N·m is 0.001 kN·m. To convert N·m to kN·m, divide by 1000 — so 10 N·m is 0.01 kN·m.
1 kN·m is 1000 N·m. To convert kN·m to N·m, multiply by 1000 — so 10 kN·m is 10000 N·m.
You do not have to open Torque Converter to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
