Typography Converter

Convert between points, pixels, ems, and rems.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Typography Converter is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Converts type and layout sizes between CSS pixels, points, picas, rem, em, inches and centimetres. Designers use it to move sizes between print specs, design tools and CSS.

How to use Typography Converter

  1. Enter the size in the left box.
  2. Choose its unit — it starts on px.
  3. Choose the target unit — it starts on rem.
  4. Read the result and paste it into your stylesheet or design file.

How it works

Everything is stored in CSS pixels at the CSS standard of 96 px per inch. A point is 1/72 in, so 1 pt = 96/72 = 1.333 px; a pica is 12 pt = 16 px; 1 cm = 96/2.54 px. rem and em are both fixed at 16 px, the default browser font size.

Example

12 pt body text is 16 px. A 24 px heading is 1.5 rem. An A4 page width of 21 cm is 793.700787 px.

Questions about Typography Converter

What is the difference between em and rem?

rem is relative to the root (html) font size; em is relative to the font size of the element’s parent, so em values compound when nested. The tool assumes 16 px for both, which is only right if nobody has changed those font sizes.

Is a CSS pixel a screen pixel?

Not on high-density screens. A CSS pixel is a reference unit of 1/96 inch; a phone with a device pixel ratio of 3 draws each CSS pixel with 3 × 3 physical pixels.
