Random String

Custom-length random string from chosen character sets.

Free to use, no sign-up required. Random String is one of 198 tools built into Xenition, alongside a chat that can use them for you.

Generates a random string of a chosen length from the character sets you tick. Handy for test data, temporary codes, nonces and placeholder IDs.

How to use Random String

  1. Set String length (characters), anywhere from 1 to 256.
  2. Under Include characters, tick any of lowercase, uppercase, numbers and symbols.
  3. Press Generate, then Copy to put the string on your clipboard.

How it works

The ticked sets are joined into one alphabet: 26 lowercase, 26 uppercase, 10 digits and the 12 symbols ! @ # $ % ^ & * - _ = +. One 32-bit value per character comes from crypto.getRandomValues, the browser’s cryptographic random source, and each value picks a character by its remainder when divided by the alphabet size. Lengths above 256 are capped at 256.

Example

The default setting, 16 characters with lowercase, uppercase and numbers, draws from 62 characters and gives something shaped like k3VqT9aZr0LmW2xB. Adding symbols widens the alphabet to 74.

Questions about Random String

Why does nothing happen when I press Generate?

At least one character set must be ticked. With every box cleared there is no alphabet to draw from, so no string is made.

How strong is a 16-character string?

With 62 possible characters each position carries about 5.95 bits, so 16 characters is roughly 95 bits of randomness, far beyond what can be guessed by trying combinations.

Use it from chat

You do not have to open Random String to use it. Ask Xenition in plain language and it runs the right tool, then carries the answer into whatever you are working on — a document, a spreadsheet, a deck.
